The internet is replete with queries and information about remedies and potential cures for acne. If people are polled about the top 10 problems of our times, acne will contend with problems like global warming and famine.

The obsession with good looks and flawless skin is here to last for as long as mankind exists. So to what extent will someone go to for that flawless complexion?

A plastic surgeon of Indian origin in Chicago, Dr. Anil Shah, says that Botox– injected directly into skin to iron out wrinkles – can also be used to eliminate large pores, excessive oil production and breakouts.

Dr. Shah is one of the very few doctors using Botox for acne treatment. According to him, Botox prevents the production of sebum, which in turn starves the bacteria that causes pimples. He believes that the way Botox works is by blocking the chemical acetycholine in the skin’s dermis. Acetycholine is responsible for increasing the production of sebum, an oily substance secreted by the sebaceous glands.

Botox, perhaps a scary word for some, is used for more than just cosmetic reasons. It has helped scores suffering from debilitating migraine attacks, asthma bouts and excessive sweating.

Dr. Shah has published the only study demonstrating the effects of Botox on acne, which observed 20 patients after a single application. After one month, all the patients saw an improvement in sebum production and a decrease in pore size. However, he only treats patients over 20 years old.
