It takes us years to figure out what suits us. Most of us owe our great realizations to mistakes and the resulting inconveniences we’ve experienced.

For as long as I can recall, I’ve had curly, unmanageable dry hair with dandruff. A couple of years ago, I thought I had found what suited my hair type.

Being in the habit of washing my hair at least thrice a week, I was asked to avoid cream-based shampoos and conditioners because of my flaky scalp. Instead, I was recommended something mild like a Johnson’s Baby Shampoo.

Johnson’s Baby Shampoo: Soft feel, rough results

This one was perfect as it did not have a strong artificial fragrance like most shampoos have. Some may like that, but they make my head feel heavy and give me a headache. This shampoo also did away with the need to use a conditioner as my hair felt clean and soft enough to leave it the way it was.

However, there were some downsides. Johnson’s Baby Shampoo is not the shampoo you want to use after an oily head massage, as your hair will remain greasy and the only thing worse than unwashed hair is partially greasy hair.

Unfortunately, after nearly six months of using this shampoo, I felt it wasn’t doing anything for my hair. The shampooing was simply a psychological fix – my hair wasn’t feeling as soft as before. In fact, it felt quite rough and unpleasant.

So, after a recommendation from the pharmacist, I switched to Garnier Fructis Fortifying Shampoo + Oil 2 in 1 for daily use.

Garnier Fructis Shampoo: Fruity fragrance, not very harsh

I love the idea of oil combined with shampoo. And it really does stand true to its claim of cleaning like shampoo and caring like oil. The combination of olives, avocado and shea butter is obviously good for people with dry hair.  I use it thrice a week and it does a good job of cleaning my hair and keeping it soft and manageable. It doesn’t wash away natural oils and neither does it make my hair oily.

GarnierThe fragrance is very refreshing, natural and fruity, though I wish it would linger until my next wash. Also, I like the fact that it’s available in 100ml bottles and Re.1 sachets. It’s the perfect shampoo to carry if you’re leaving town for a few days.

The packaging is quite appealing too. However, the shampoo tends to ooze out of the bottle if subjected to rough use. Like the Johnson’s Baby shampoo, this too isn’t a good pick to wash your hair after an oil massage.

But other than that, it’s pretty good.
