If you’re a lover of comic art but have always been disappointed by the dearth of relatable Indian characters and a regional sensibility in the comic book world, then Abhijeet Kini’s merchandize is sure to be a pleasant surprise. We caught up with the illustrator at QuirkShop, an event hosted by Encore Entertainment at Lager Bay in Bandra last week.

Abhijeet, who’s spent nearly a decade illustrating for major publications, including Tinkle Comics, launched his self-published graphic novel at this year’s Comic Con in Mumbai, starring one of his most popular characters – Angry Maushi (Auntie in Marathi). As anyone who’s ever encountered one would attest, the Angry Maushi line of merchandize – which includes bags, mousepads, fridge magnets, coasters and key chains – definitely hits close to home.

Angry Maushi Coasters and Mouse Pads To Lighten Up Serious Monday Blues! If you’re not into nose-flaring middle-aged women, then some of Abhijeet’s other characters may be more to your liking. Take your pick from Daku Super Singh, Mr. Satankar, Prof. Iyerstein or Trampy Sawant (don’t ask!). If Bollywood is more your thing, check out the Bolly Baddies line. There’s definitely something that will tickle your funny bone, Mumbai-ishtyle!

What we love most about Abhijeet’s art work is that despite being a reasonably ‘struggling’ artist, he’s not one to overcharge on his merchandize!
